Headjoints
 
The quality and design of a flute or piccolo's headjoint is vital to the instrument's responsiveness, projection and tone. There are many makes and models available with which a player can change or improve their sound. Resonant characteristics are enhanced by the use of precious metals in the lip plate, riser or tubing.
Michael Allen
After serving an apprenticeship as a gold and silversmith in Hatton Garden, Mike developed his formative flute making skills in the all flutes plus workshop. Mike is now regarded as one of the most innovative flute makers in the UK, making the majority of his own tools and developing new ways of producing his fine flutes and headjoints. His headjoints are hand made in the truest sense and available in Silver, Silver with 9 carat gold riser and Silver with 9 carat gold lip-plate and riser. Mike also produces an excellent alto flute headjoint in silver.
Arista
Headjoints of excellent pedigree by Miguel Arista, a Boston flute maker of 20 years experience. Available in 14 carat gold, silver, silver with 14 carat gold lip-plate and riser and recently introduced grenadilla wood.
Emanuel
Emanuel Arista is from Lima, Peru, and started making flutes in 1976. Every flute is made and / or inspected personally by the maker, who has also invented and produced tools, dies and machines for flute making. Emanuel produces headjoints in 14 carat gold, silver, silver with 14 carat gold riser and silver with 14 carat lip-plate and riser.
Andrew Oxley
Andrew Oxley, a British maker, began as a flute player and studied at the Royal College of Music. He is largely self-taught and has experimented with many different materials, including copper pipe. Although he has made flutes Andrew is now almost exclusively a headjoint maker and has made many seamed headjoints. His range of headjoints is very popular, and available in Silver, Silver with 9ct Gold riser and Silver with 9ct Gold riser and lip-plate
Nagahara
Kanichi Nagahara, having a broad experience working for both Japanese and American flute makers, has created flutes and head joints which draw on the best aspects of both worlds, combining Japanese production ingenuity with traditional Boston, USA craftsmanship. Nagahara headjoints are available in 950 Silver with 14ct riser, 950 Silver with 14ct 'Nagahara' riser and 950 Silver Platinum riser as well as entirely gold and platinum models.
Dana Sheridan
Dana Sheridan began building flutes in 1972 whilst studying composition at Berkley School in Boston. He worked with Wm. S. Haynes, Verne Q. Powell, where he was manager in 1981, and Brannen Brothers before introducing Sheridan flutes and headjoints in 1982. Dana Sheridan now lives and works in Cologne, Germany, as well as maintaining a workshop in Boston making headjoints in Gold, Silver, Silver with 14ct Gold riser and Silver with 14ct Gold riser/lip-plate.
