Martin Wenner

The cylindrically bored Renaissance flute was employed both as an ensemble and a soloist instrument between the beginning of the 16th Century and about 1680. The most common size was the tenor register in D, on which experienced players can play a tonal range of three octaves. Preserved instruments are, for the most part, not hand-signed and can be found particularly in northern Italian museums such as the Academia Filarmonica or the Bibliteca Capitolare in Verona. Important sources describe the instrument and the way it was played, e.g. Martin Agricola (1529 and 1545), Jambe de Fer (1556), Martin Mersenne (1636), and others.

We build our Renaissance flutes in imitation of preserved originals and according to historical construction principles at the pitches of a=440 Hz or a=415 Hz, and in a single piece construction method. If requested, you may receive your Renaissance flute in two pieces, 0making it easier to transport. We use plumwood - and, when specially requested and at an extra charge, also European boxwood.

For the construction of this transverse flute we use only the best long-stored woods, as well as selected materials. To protect the flute, we will send it in a handmade bag made from a tastefully patterned fabric. A wiping stick is also included in the delivery.

C. Palanca

Carlo Palanca was active as a fagottist and instrument builder in Turin, where he died at the ripe old age of 95 in 1783. As opposed to many other Baroque flutes, his instrument has an oval embouchure which allows for a more powerful sound. The original is manufactured in ebony, which additionally compresses the sound. In spite of this, the Palanca flute is no "brutal" instrument, but rather allows the most diverse tonal shades. The usually very muted cross-fingered chords such as F, G sharp or B are especially strong on this flute and have a very good core. The Palanca flute can be described as a universal instrument that covers a large spectrum of flute literature. It is especially suited for music by Locatelli, Platti, Händel, but also J. Seb. Bach.

Our Palanca flute is made of grenadilla wood, as is the original, which comes from a private collection in Frankfurt. This wood is less susceptible to cracks than ebony and has excellent sound characteristics. On special request we can also manufacture the flute in boxwood or ebony. The pitch is a=415 Hz.

For the construction of this transverse flute we use only the best long-stored woods, as well as selected materials. To protect the flute, we will send it in a handmade bag made from a tastefully patterned fabric. A wiping stick is also included in the delivery.
